Barrel Fired Pottery
Potter Robin Reynolds

Barrel Firing is one of many alternative firing techniques used to create abstract, natural effects on pottery.    Greenware pottery (unfired) is sanded and buffed, then coated with a special clay slip called Terra Sigilatta and then buffed again.  A  smooth, shiny surface is important at this stage because there will be no glaze applied to finish the piece.  Pots are then Bisque-fired before being placed into a 55 gallon barrel along with wood shavings and various additives, which produce distinctive color effects.  Black comes from the smoke. Greens come from copper powder we throw in the kiln; browns, I think, come from coffee grounds and or rock salt; reds come from iron oxide.  No two pieces could ever be  exacly alike.

After the combustible materials are lit and allowed to burn for 8-12 hours until cool, the pieces are removed, wiped off, waxed and buffed.  The results are beautiful to my eye...and I hope yours.   If not, you have no taste and should buy your home decor from Walmart.  (har har)
